Did you know that 10 years ago, trainings used to be held at the SLE Combat Engine Camp near Jalan Kayu? Rowers would stay at the camp overnight after work on Saturdays, sleep to
gether, eat together and sweat together. Trainings typically take up the whole of Sundays from morning till dusk. I was told there was excellent team bonding then!
Can you imagine rowing around Singapore Island in a dragonboat? That's what our guys did in 1986 and 1990 in not 1 but 2 dragonboats! Heard that their hauling of the dragonboats
over the causeway was a traffic stopping act!
In 1997, we went to take part in the Penang race.
The club used to do a pilgrimage row to Kusu Island to pray @ the temple! I can't recall the ferry being so hard to book?
In 1989, Safra DB was divided into 2 factions due to some disagreements. The disagreements were serious enough to cause the exit of quite a few veteran rowers who went on to join
other clubs.
Safra produced quite a number of national team rowers: Eng tat, Hak Loon, Thomas chew, Kenny, David, George and Chi khing.
The pride of Safra was our 1991 canoeing team which won all the national championships that year and went on to beat all their opponents when they went to compete in Malaysia. Comprising Ching Yann, Josephine, Chua Lai Sian and coached by Omar.
Safra DB match-made 11 couples! They are Hong Lai and Bee Hwa, Kok Thye and Pee Kiaw, Han Kian and Peck See, Kok Wee and Ching Yann, Dennis and Josephine, Kenny and Chris, Kay Kit
and Cecilia, Jack and Peelian, Mark and Serena, Jansen and Carie, Jeff and May.
